So I've started running lately, which is a tad bit exciting. I've tried running in the past and it just hasn't gone so well. I've had these silly shin problems and I don't know... I think I just get bored or something. But I've always wanted to be one of those people who runs! So funny. Are you a runner?! If you are, you're my hero. But anyway... this past week something has changed. I've started doing interval training, and guess what? It works. So guys, I think I've found the key.
So what exactly has changed? Well, when I run, I don't just go out and run for 45 minutes (YET...) For now the key for me is to run in baby steps.
Have you seen the movie "What about Bob?" It's my family's favourite movie (highly recommend.) In the story Bill Murray is an anxious patient and Richard Dreyfus is his psychiatrist. The advice "Bob" (Bill Murray) is given my "Dr Marvin" (Richard Dreyfus) is to do things in "baby steps." He procedes to tell Bob not to get overwhelmed with a whole day's worth of tasks, but to take baby steps and just focus on one thing at a time. Wise words Dr Marvin, wise words. So to get out of the room and to the elevator Bob coaches himself: "Baby steps to the door... Baby steps to the elevator... Baby steps get on the elevator..." And he succeeds. (It's hilarious you really must see it.)
There's something about tackling a project in bite size pieces that just takes the pressure off. Any big task we look at in it's entirety is often overwhelming... but breaking it up into smaller sections is when progress is made. It's the same with our dreams. When we see our dreams in their fullness they seem so huge and overwhelming. (And hello, so they should be!)
But.... we don't want to feel so scared and overwhelmed we can't move forward. So how do we take a BIG dream and see it happen? Baby steps. So here are a few things that really help me break my big projects down into bite size pieces.
1. Look at your dream, project or task in its entirety.
2. Decide what you want to get done and by when.
3. Make a list of everything you need to do and work out how long each task will take.
4. Schedule them all in your diary.
5. Set your timer as you do each task. Giving yourself a time limit helps you work smarter. Nothing like a counting down clock in your face to force efficiency!
"God makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though they may stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand." Psalm 37:23
But then at the end of the day, how good is it knowing we are not alone in all of this? God sees us all and he's ready and waiting to help us every step of the way. :) Since returning from America last month I have really put these little steps into place with my finishing my book. It has worked so powerfully! (And clearly it's working for my running too ha ha... hoorah!)
Anyway, just know I am cheering you on as you chase your too dreams my friend. I'm developing an "Anything Can Happen" Dreams Mentoring Program in the next few months. So if you are interested in being part of it you can EMAIL ME and I will keep you posted!
Bless you guys and happy weekend!
